Evaluating Empathy: Making Children Safe   Add to Cart  $150.00

How does a Child Protective Services worker or any other professional know when a child is safe? This difficult, yet critical determination has been a source of concern and worry since early child welfare efforts began in the mid-20th Century.  Research tells us  that the critical element regarding child safety is the presence of empathy on the part of the parent or caregiver.   The question is: How do we determine the presence of empathy in the adult-child relationship?  What specific interactions, responses, attitudes or emotions are indications of empathy, and how can we evaluate and use what we see and hear during a home visit or office conference?

At the request of the Indiana Department of Child Services, Naomi Haines Griffith developed the 3-hour training captured on this DVD that is aimed at helping the CPS worker,  home visitor, or other service provider look past the obvious and begin to determine whether empathy is present in the adult-child relationship.  She outlines a series of “Observations” to be made by the visitor and suggests “Questions” that will help elicit an understanding of the relationship which exists between the two.  “Professionals must use all of their understanding and experience, including their feelings and intuition, in determining whether the child is safe.”  Naomi addresses this critically important evaluation using her own background as a child abuse investigator and supervisor.  Not only is the training practical, insightful and thought provoking, it will provide a methodology for the intervener and a structure for the supervisor to make critically important decisions.
